Beyond the standard Chile entry requirements, such as the SAG Entry Affidavit, travelers visiting Easter Island must meet the following requirements:

Important: Stays on the island are limited to a maximum of 30 days. Your outbound ticket must confirm your departure date.

Do I need a permit to visit Easter Island?

Yes. The Chilean government classifies the area as the Special Territory of Easter Island/Rapa Nui. In addition to completing the Single Entry Form (FUI), you must purchase an entry ticket to Rapa Nui National Park.

How to get to Easter Island

The most practical way to reach Easter Island (Rapa Nui) is by air from Santiago, Chile.

This route is operated by LATAM Airlines and has an approximate flight time of 6 hours.

It’s also possible to make the journey by boat or cruise, but they take longer and tend to be more expensive. The Chilean Navy vessel Aquiles sails from Valparaíso to Easter Island twice a year, and the full journey takes approximately 7 days.

What items are prohibited on Easter Island?

Chile’s Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) enforces special measures to protect the island’s ecological balance. These rules prohibit visitors from bringing:

  • Animals, except pets (dogs and cats) that comply with official health requirements. Other animals may only enter with authorization from SAG for scientific or other approved purposes.
  • Bees, apiculture material, larvae, used beehives, and products such as honey, pollen, wax, or propolis. Beekeeping equipment can only be carried if it’s new and unused.

Plant products (from mainland Chile) are allowed, except those intended for propagation.

What vaccines do I need to travel to Easter Island?

The official entry requirements for Easter Island don’t include vaccinations. However, the World Health Organization recommends that travelers have the following vaccinations before visiting Rapa Nui:

  • Hepatitis A
  • Typhoid
  • Yellow Fever
  • Rabies
  • Influenza
  • Combined vaccines protecting against pneumococcus, tetanus, diphtheria, hepatitis, and other viruses

  • Entering Rapa Nui National Park requires an authorized guide.
  • Avoid touching or feeding marine wildlife, especially sea turtles.
  • There’s no public transportation on the island, so renting a vehicle is recommended.
  • The local currency is the Chilean peso, although some establishments accept U.S. dollars.
  • The best time to visit is between September and May. In February, the Tapati Rapa Nui cultural festival takes place.
